What Travel Will Look Like in 10 Years-Time

Lately, there have been various articles on the web talking about how the future of travel will look like in 10 years time. Trying to predict what the far future holds for the travel industry beyond current trends, is an imaginative and fascinating process considering what emerging technology can bring.
Virtual vacations
Let’s first start with the so-called virtual reality. Apparently, this technology can transport us in places we’ve never been before and that we’ve always dreamed of. And the best part is, it can happen while being on the sofa at home. Such technology is represented by headsets like Oculus Rift, that will allow travelers to test-drive destinations.
Virtual travel companions
Next would be the “digital travel buddies”, which are virtual companions that use artificial intelligence (just like in the movie Her or a more advanced version of Siri) who would suggest and book trips according to your preferences. Moreover, just to make sure you have your requirements met on the spot, such digital buddies will be available for rent as part of the travel package - one more burden removed from the traveler’s shoulders.
Wearable technology
In a previous blog post, we were talking about how Google Glasses could ease air travel, saving carriers time and gate fees. Let’s take a step further and see how wearable technology will evolve. It is predicted this technology will evolve into something very tiny, so tiny that you can insert it in your contact lenses. But what are the benefits? This is where things get more interesting: when traveling abroad you could wear contact lenses that can provide live translations to break language barriers. Or, even more, this tiny technology could be inserted in the body (sort of a chip) with the use for instance for parents to track their children.
Semantic Search
Such technology translates into voice- and gesture-controlled tools that “will be able to scan humans and read emotions, providing content likely to increase our levels of contentment or inspire us to buy a certain product.”
All these above-mentioned technologies and more can be found in a report called “The Future of Travel 2024”, consisting of predictions made by The Future Laboratory and other 56 trend experts. It is claimed that they are “either real or undergoing prototype development”. One thing we know for sure: this high tech would definitely change the way we travel and relate to the idea of travel.
